A Message from the Interim Vice President for Research and Health Affairs   

Welcome to the Research website of Charles R. ÇÑ×ÓÊÓƵ University of Medicine and Science (ÇÑ×ÓÊÓƵ)! I am honored to serve ÇÑ×ÓÊÓƵ as interim vice president of research and health affairs.   

Our research enterprise is organized around five pillars

• Cancer
• Cardiometabolic Disease
• HIV
• Mental Health
• Health Services/Policy

We seek to understand the causes of disparities in health and to mold and empower creative thinkers who develop innovative solutions that help to reduce or eliminate these disparities.  

Research that has emerged from ÇÑ×ÓÊÓƵ to achieve this goal runs the gamut: studies of the impact of e-cigarettes on breast tumor growth; assessments of whether siblings can help increase the uptake of HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) in Latino men who have sex with men; evaluations of the utility of machine learning to identify diabetic individuals within the healthcare safety net who are at risk of vision-threatening diabetic retinopathy; examinations of how to engage new researchers from underrepresented backgrounds in aging and substance use disorder research; studies of how socio-economic and environmental factors impact cellular, molecular, genetic, and epigenetic drivers of poor health outcomes in under-resourced communities; and community-partnered participatory research that seeks to improve a variety of health outcomes in our community. Our faculty members continue to partner with researchers in California, across the US, and internationally on a wide variety of important studies funded by the National Institutes of Health, the US Department of Defense, the State of California, and various foundations. 

The Office of Research seeks to support investigators in achieving their research objectives by working collaboratively with them, their staff, and students. The Office of Sponsored Programs provides investigators with support for grant proposal development and submission. The Office of Research Integrity and Compliance, which houses the ÇÑ×ÓÊÓƵ Institutional Review Board, provides training on ethics, conduct of research involving human subjects, and conduct of research involving animals, with a goal of promoting ethics, safety, integrity, and regulatory compliance. As ÇÑ×ÓÊÓƵ investigators expand their portfolio of patents, the university seeks to connect them with industry partners that help to commercialize their efforts.  

The priority of the Office of Research is to expand the range of services provided to investigators and assist them in their research endeavors. We look forward to working with you to ensure the success of your projects.
